The once vibrant and iconic nightclub, The Satellite (formerly known as Spaceland), holds a special place in the hearts of many Angelenos. It served as a cultural landmark on the east side of Los Angeles, hosting renowned acts such as Lady Gaga and Foo Fighters. However, the unfortunate impact of the pandemic led to its closure in 2020, leaving behind a void in the local music scene.
Ben Golomb, a member of the band Modern Time Machines, embarked on a labor of love to capture the essence of The Satellite and its surrounding neighborhood. Inspired by the changing landscape of Los Angeles, Golomb meticulously compiled photos and footage to create a visually stunning video that pays homage to the bygone era of Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Hollywood.
The concept for the video took root in Golomb’s mind in late 2019, spurred by the closure of the iconic Amoeba Music location and the demolition of the Lytton Savings building. His fascination with vintage aesthetics and time travel themes culminated in a project that spanned years, with Golomb reimagining unused footage from 2014 to breathe life into his vision.
As Golomb delved deeper into the history of The Satellite, he unearthed its origins as a restaurant known as The Happy Hollow in the 1950s, later metamorphosing into The Red Chimney. The loss of The Satellite struck a chord with many members of the local music community, symbolizing the end of an era and a cherished gathering place for music enthusiasts.
Modern Time Machines provided the musical backdrop for the video, infusing it with a dreamy space rock tune titled “Ghost Signs (Sleight of Hand).” The lyrics delve into the bittersweet theme of reminiscing about the past and contemplating the possibility of bringing back lost moments through time travel. The collaboration of bandmates and friends added depth and emotion to the recording, enhancing the overall ambiance of the project.
The video features actors such as Charles Phoenix and Happy Hollows lead singer Sarah Negahdari, adding a touch of nostalgia and authenticity to the narrative. Golomb’s dedication to preserving the essence of The Satellite and its surroundings shines through in every frame, capturing the spirit of a lost era while paying homage to the enduring legacy of a once-thriving cultural hub.
The video serves as a poignant tribute to The Satellite/Spaceland and the vibrant music scene that once thrived in Silver Lake and its neighboring areas. Through Golomb’s meticulous attention to detail and passion for storytelling, viewers are transported on a visual journey that encapsulates the essence of a bygone era, inviting them to reflect on the transformative power of music and community.
