During the Paris Games, Team GB boxing doctor Harj Singh and physio Robbie Lillis were faced with a life-or-death situation when Uzbekistan boxing coach Tulkin Kilichev suffered a cardiac arrest in the warm-up area. Celebrating a gold medal win, Kilichev suddenly collapsed, prompting Dr Singh and Mr Lillis to spring into action. With quick thinking and heroic actions, the medical team was able to save Kilichev’s life by performing CPR and administering a shock using a defibrillator.
Describing the intense moment, Mr Lillis shared that there was a mix of celebration and distress in the warm-up area as the coach collapsed. Despite the shock and fear in the air, the medical staff remained composed and focused on saving Kilichev’s life. The ordeal was emotional for all involved, with Mr Tillaboev of Uzbekistan’s boxing federation acknowledging Kilichev as a hero and mentor among the team.
Dr Singh reflected on the experience, noting how it truly put things into perspective. The sudden and critical situation required immediate action, showcasing the importance of being prepared for extreme circumstances. The Team GB medical staff undergo regular training at the UK Sports Institute, including a pitch-side trauma course, which proved invaluable in saving Kilichev’s life.
Mr Lillis expressed gratitude for the training he received, acknowledging that while such situations are not part of his daily job, he was able to effectively carry out life-saving measures due to his preparedness. The adrenaline from the experience kept him awake that night, but the satisfaction of knowing he helped keep someone alive was a profound feeling. Reflecting on his mother’s words, he viewed the experience as his “Olympic moment” – a moment of sheer dedication and heroism in the face of adversity.
Both Dr Singh and Mr Lillis expressed a desire to visit Kilichev while he recovers, demonstrating their care and concern for the well-being of the coach. The harrowing experience served as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the significance of being trained and prepared for emergencies.
