In the dense Mexican jungle, nestled at the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, archaeologists have made a remarkable discovery in the ancient Maya city of Cobá. This hidden treasure trove of history includes a vast stone slab adorned with an inscription of 123 glyphs, revealing fascinating details about the founding date of a town called Keh Witz Nal, or “Deer Mountain”, in the year 569 CE. The discovery sheds light on a previously unknown Maya ruler, K’awiil Ch’ak Chéen, invoking the powerful deity of lightning, K’awiil.
Located in what is now the state of Quintana Roo, Cobá is a once-glorious city that may have been built as early as 50 BCE and inhabited for over 1,500 years. With its peak population reaching an estimated 50,000 inhabitants, Cobá was a thriving cultural hub in ancient times. The archaeological site still bears its original Maya name, Ko’ba a, meaning rough waters, and is adorned with intricate engravings and sculptures that offer a glimpse into the spiritual and aesthetic lives of the Maya civilization.
Excavations at Cobá are meticulous and painstaking, with Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) taking the time to uncover and preserve the city’s monuments that have been reclaimed by the jungle and the passage of time. The recently discovered stone slab, found at the bottom of a sacred pool, covers an area of 11 square meters and is adorned with beautifully carved glyphs in a unique L-shaped arrangement. The inscription not only sheds light on the rulers of Cobá, including the adoption of the name of the god K’awiil by many of them but also provides valuable insights into the city’s history and religious beliefs.
Future Research and Preservation Efforts
The archaeological team at Cobá is now focused on further studying the inscription and ensuring the preservation of the stone against potential damage from water and erosion. A detailed, high-resolution 3D construction of the slab has been created, allowing for in-depth analysis without disturbing the artifact further. The unveiling of this remarkable discovery in the heart of the Mexican jungle provides an invaluable glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the ancient Maya civilization and highlights the ongoing efforts to unearth and preserve history for future generations.
