The recent incident in the English Channel has left a trail of devastation, with at least 12 people losing their lives, including 10 women and girls. As the mayor of Le Portel, a French coastal town involved in the rescue operation, Olivier Barbarin, described it, “the bottom of the boat ripped open.” The French coastguard managed to rescue over 65 individuals after the vessel encountered difficulties on a fateful Tuesday morning.

France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin confirmed the heartbreaking news of 12 fatalities, with a majority of them being women and girls. Shockingly, only eight out of the 70 people on the boat had life jackets.

The French maritime prefecture coordinated the rescue mission, deploying resources from various agencies, including the French customs, Navy, and the SNSM.
